Don't wait: the ever-increasing benefits of solid exercise

Got back to the gym yesterday, which was counter-intuitive, since my office had no air conditioning (ha, but the gym did!) I had not been on the treadmill since May, having traded it in for walks with the dog. But it felt good to get back on the four-miles-per-hour-at-level-four-incline-for-forty-minute-formula that I tried to stick to during the winter. And I spent time on the upper arm machine (what's with those new batwings I have this summer?)

Today, I feel even better. What was I waiting for?

I've been struck by the increasing number of stories about the benefits of exercise in the aging body. Not just for keeping weight down, but in keeping the brain flexible and strong(er) as we age. It's the one thing you can do to feel, look and think better at a time when things seem to conspire against you.

Here's a great piece from More Magazine, The Workout Numbers You Need to Know.

The Well Blog over at the New York Times, brings together several reliable studies on the benefits of exercise to the aging brain--and it helps, no matter when you start. Good news, indeed.

And here's more, from The Healthy Librarian.
