Fresh stuff, best-of-the-web for midlife women

The second in our It's OK series: clean out your closet!

My mom is going to kill me for this...

Ladies, I refer to this as "the dress." It's that one thing in my mom's closet that needs to go.

Wait! That's right! It's not in her closet, it's in MY closet.

Not funny.

This dress has been sitting in my closet for at least a decade. It clearly should never be worn again.

At the time, it looked great on her.

At the time, it was kind of in style. At the time, it lived in her closet. At. The. Time. (Key words.)

She wore it to a summer wedding and the bright colors looked great on her nicely-tanned Mediterranean skin, as they still would. But this dress, after a while, lost its appeal and stylishness.

I would never let her wear it again. More importantly, she would never let herself wear it again.

So why is it still in the closet?

Better yet, why is it still in my closet?

Remember last month when Gillian told moms everywhere that it's OK to freak out when kids move off to college? Well, this month we're telling you women that it's OK to clean out your closets.

In fact, we think you should do it right now! Think about it. If something has been hanging in your closet for years and hasn't been touched since, then it's time to get rid of it.

I know you probably think you might wear it again. You're thinking, "What if something comes up? What if I need to wear bright colors one day? What if one day I'm forced to wear only that dress and nothing else for the rest of my life?"

What if? What if? What if?

The answer: it's not going to happen. That garment is dead and it should have been buried a long time ago.

I do it too. But I've overcome those what ifs and have successfully overhauled my closet more than a time or two.

So seize the day! Go through that closet, and those dresser drawers, and wherever else you might be stowing away hidden treasure (in your kids' closets) and get rid of it. It's taking up space in a sea that could be filled with inexpensive, yet stylish staples. And remember-it's OK!

Wisdom

Wisdom from one so young. I bit the bullet, and got rid of maybe half the things that should be removed from my closet. I'm sure it really was half. Or nearly. I'm sure, but there are emergencies you know.
