Fresh stuff, best-of-the-web for midlife women Great writing by women you'd like to have a drink with. My kingdom for a pair of shoesI was at a meeting recently with several middle-aged women, and as we were waiting for everyone to arrive, the subject turned to shoes. More specificially, why we can't find a damn pair of them with a simple, mid-height heel. Not a flat, not a four-inch stilletto. Work shoes. I'm talking to you, Mr. Macy. And you, messrs. Neiman and Marcus. And you, the buyer for DSW Shoe Warehouse, who seems to have lost his or her mind over rows and rows of shoes that look like this:

You've got to be kidding. Who buys these things? I'm not sure that even my most fashion-conscious UMass students would wear these. Go to any of these stores and try to find a well-made, simple pair of black shoes with 1 3/4 to 2 inch heels, the optimal height that for anyone who is spending the bulk of her day at work rather than clubbing with the Kardashian sisters at Tao Las Vegas. You will be very sad and frustrated.
Why is this? Isn't our money any good anymore? Two tips on the shoe hunt: Clark's has some decent, comfortable options, although the style isn't for everyone. Some of the designs look a little Hobbity, but try them on anyway, they sometimes look different on the foot. And I have found the service at Clark's to be very good. And, of course, Zappos.com. I ordered three options there and kept David Tate's Martina. In fact, the David Tate, Donald J. Pliner and Trotters lines all have many nice shorter-heel options. The other two I returned, for free. Two-way free shipping is the dealmaker. --B.J. Roche
